City Athletics Association to be revived
AFTER years of inactivity, plans are currently underway for the revival of the Honiara Athletics Association.
With that, a meeting is being scheduled to take place this Saturday 23rd July, at the Multi-purpose hall conference room from 10am to 12pm.
The proposer of the meeting was former Solomon Islands National Sprinter, James Maela.
According to Maela, the purpose of the meeting was to elect the new office bearers to man the association as plans to revive the body was on a serious note.
“All interested athletes, current athletes, former athletes, and sports masters in schools within the Honiara city are being invited to the very important meeting.
“As I have said, the idea is to reorganize the association to develop athletics in the city ahead of the 2023 Pacific Games,” Maela told Star Sports.
Star Sports understand that the Honiara Athletics Association was formed in 1990 but however died down in 1995 due to the inactivity of those in the executive that year.
Some of the country’s successful athletes who reign during the active times of the association were Peter Forau, Naoyuki Fujiyama, and Savino.
Maela said, though they have not active in recent times, the performance of athletes representing Honiara in the recent Solomon Games has turned out positive.
He also wishes to thank the city Mayor Alfrence Fatai, the Youth Sports and Women Committee Chairman- Councillor Greg Malefo for supporting the athletes representing team Honiara in the Games.
Meanwhile, any other queries relating to the proposed meeting this weekend can be forwarded to Maela on his mobile phone, 7559622.
