FORMER Prime Minister and Finance Minister Snyder Rini has been voted out during Wednesday’s National General Election in one of biggest election upsets.
The election has seen newcomer and local businessman Chachabule Rebi Amoi being elected as the new Member of Parliament for Marovo Constituency.
Three candidates contested the seat.
In the end Mr Amoi polled 5,619 with Mr Rini bagging 3,766 votes. Tahu Ataban only managed to get 84 votes.
Mr Amoi is a member of Solomon Islands People First Part.
He is a shareholder and director of Fair Trade Company that operates a wide range of business activities from shipping to timber exports.
Mr Rini was elected into Parliament since 1997 and has held the seat for many years.
Returning officer for Marovo constituency Mathew Sakiri made the official declaration at Gizo, Western province yesterday evening.
A large number of crowd including some voters and supporters of the wining candidate celebrated the victory following the declaration.
Marovo constituency was the last constituency to be counted yesterday.
The winning candidate was not present in the provincial capital when the results were announced.
Meanwhile, police officers in Gizo maintained high security presence during the final announcement of the results for all the nine constituencies in Western Province.
