SUVA, (FIJI TIMES) – Fiji rugby’s Olympic dream is just 10 points away and the Vodafone Fiji 7s team has two tournaments to rake up the points.
Coach Ben Ryan does not just want a place in the Olympics, this season, Fiji is the closest behind leaders after a long time and there are real chances that the team can win the sevens world series as well.
“If we win both tournaments we will win the series. If that doesn’t happen then it’s all about making sure we finish above New Zealand in the next two tournaments and grab back the four point lead South Africa currently have on us,” Ryan said.
South Africa currently leads the series with 129 points, Fiji has 125, the All Black Sevens on 120 while England is in fourth with 100.
These are the current four that are looking at qualifying for the Olympics and of the four, only Fiji has a real chance of upsetting the lead and winning the sevens series.
Ryan’s players will march into camp in the week following Nawaka 7s and players who show promise or have the attributes required by Ryan could find themselves training with the extended squad.
“Maybe new players would be selected but it is down to form again and also the blend I feel we need to be successful in the last two legs,” Ryan said.
Less than a month remain for next leg in Glasgow in Scotland. The tournament starts on May 9. In Glasgow, Fiji head Pool C and the team finds itself with Scotland, Wales and Portugal.
Ryan has made his intentions known to the boys that he aims to win the next two legs and for that the players have been requested to hold off all partying and celebration and be focused on winning the sevens world series.
