THE National Government through the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) will start repair and maintenance work on Honiara’s main roads as soon as the current bad weather subsides.
Acting MID Permanent Secretary Jimmy Nuake on Tuesday said this road maintenance will include the Vura-Naha-Kolaridge road under the National Transport Fund (NTF).
“We have procured three (3) contracts to start maintenance work.
“Contracts are expected to be signed this week,” he said.
As reported earlier requests for quotations were sent out in December 2017 and the status so far is:
– The Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC) Reports compiled by the Procurement Unit of CPIU; and
– Recommendations expected to be submitted to the Ministerial Tender Board and the Central Tender Board for award via circular memo this week and contractor (s) to mobilize straight after a contract is signed.
The deteriorating road conditions in the Honiara City has seen its worst after the heavy downpour past days.
Its obvious most city roads are riddle with potholes and peel off tar seals caused by natural forces such run-offs during rainy weather.
Also the current poor road condition affects commuters and bus service providers.
Its understood MID has Medium Term Transport Action Plan (MTTAP) 2017 – 2021 (5-year rolling plan).
Meanwhile the JICA funded (SDB213m) Kukum Highway Upgrading Project from Central Market to SINU gate is expected to be completed by November this year.
