Nearly kills father who was at home
A FATHER has escaped death after a huge rock destroyed their family home at Tuvaruhu hill side in central Honiara, Wednesday.
It was believed that the rock fell from the hill side as a result of the heavy rain that the country is experiencing.
A statement from the Solomon Islands Red Cross (SIRC) Emergency team said, an assessment was carried out yesterday to identify the situation and the damage done to the family home.
This is because the heavy rain can increase chances of landslides and falling rock occurring, which may cause threats to both life and property.
In an interview with the Solomon Star, SIRC Communication Coordinator, Kennedy Waitara said the father was lucky to be alive.
“The rock rolled down from the hill side and hit the family home when the father was inside.
“He was unconscious after the incident and has also sustained some injuries including one on his leg,” Mr Waitara said.
He added that the victim is now recovering but need to seek further medical check-ups to ascertain the level of his injury.
Due to the complete destruction of the family home, they are currently residing with their relatives in a nearby area.
Mr Waitara stated that according to their survey, there is a high risk at the location given that some rocks are still up at the hillside and can cause disasters which can result in the loss of life and property.
Solomon Island Red Cross society is now preparing non food items to be distributed to the family this morning.
Meanwhile, SIRC is humbly calling on people living along hillsides to be very careful through the current wet weather.
