THE Rubbish collection in Auki town will resume as of today.
This was confirmed by Malaita Province Town Council field supervisor Ben Laufa following concerns over poor waste management in Auki town in the past weeks.
The poor waste management by the province government has put the work of the Auki town council in the spotlight.
Mr Laufa clarified that the council has experienced challenges clearing and compressing the driveway of the dump site to allow safe dumping and offloading of rubbish.
He said the council has faced a lot of issues with the dump site as there is no option to improve the current dump site driveway. The only option is to create a driveway to push the rubbish further in.
“The current dump site in Auki is located in a swampy place and can be dangerous for vehicles at the time of offloading of waste.”
The only option is to clear the rubbish further and compress a partway for vehicles to safely dumping the rubbish.” Mr Laufa said.
He said rubbish collection should resume today.
He apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused to public and residences in Auki by the delay in collecting rubbish.
However, he calls on the public to continue working together with the Malaita province town council to keep the town’s environment clean.
