Uncollected rubbish has been piling up in and outside of rubbish bins in the Malaita Provincial capital of Auki following a lack of rubbish collection by the Auki Town Council.
Reports reaching Solomon Star Auki claimed Auki Town Council had failed its part in doing rubbish collection in the township for the past weeks.
This has resulted in rubbish bins in the township being filled up to maximum capacity as some commercial stores are resorting to burning rubbish to try to get rid of some.
Auki Town Council currently has two garbage collection trucks which were acquired during the MARA government reign with the aim of keeping Auki town clean.
The last time a garbage vehicle was seen around in Auki collecting rubbish was back in February this year. Since then, there has been no sighting of the garbage collection trucks in town.
For the past two years, Auki residents have been getting used to a clean Auki town environment due to the commitment of Auki Town Council in ensuring rubbish is frequently collected and disposed of at the Molou dumpsite.
Some inside sources told this paper that lack of financial support from the Malaita Provincial Government (MPG) to the responsible division is the reason for the delay in rubbish collection.
Some commentators have predicted that if Auki Town Council continues to fail its part in collecting rubbish, Auki town will turn stinky in the coming weeks due to uncollected rubbish.
Head of Auki Town Council Ben Laufa could not be reached yesterday to comment on the issue.
