Suva (Fiji Times) – YEARS on from having donned the nationals jumper William Ryder is fighting for a ticket back in with the national squad.
Representing Tokatoka Westfield in the Matintar 7s, Ryder said he was working hard to prove critics wrong after he was claimed to be unfit upon returning to the field of play at the Coral Coast 7s in January.
“It’s been like months now that we have been training because I heard the national coach had indicated in the media that I was unfit from Coral Coast 7s but I was the top try scorer from there and I am happy that Master Epeli Lagiloa and Ponijese Lou asked me to come and join the team so I was happy because he (Epeli) is my mentor.
I have been going through a lot of really hard training. Well I am just trying to be the best player I can be and reach that level again which is why I came to Epeli,” he said.
Understanding the level of commitment required Ryder said he was willing to give his utmost best for an opportunity to don the white jersey again.
“I’m looking forward and if they give me a chance I can prove them wrong that I still have that talent, those side steps. I am happy with the boys but I am not playing today (yesterday) because I got a fever last night but if they give me a chance to play for Fiji I can give 150 per cent, definitely. The Olympics is coming and I would like to join the team to know the players and learn how they play and adjust myself,” he said.
