THERE is a new way of nomination in the upcoming National General Election for those who want to nominate candidates.
Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC) Chief Electoral Officer Mose Saitala confirmed this during their recent training for Election officers.
Saitala said the new nomination has two parts, first it requires a qualified person to become a candidate to run for the election.
“The person must also be no less than 21 years of age and that he must be a registered voter anywhere in the country,” he said.
He added, the second part of the nominations is the completions and filings of the nominations.
“That part has a lot more need to be done.
“Firstly, the nomination form must be completed by way of signing by candidate in the nomination forms with signatories of three nominators.
“The three nominators must also be residence of that particular constituency of the candidate,” he added.
Saitala said with regards to candidate who has a political party, a confirmation from a political party registrar is also required.
Secondly, he said if a political party candidate wishing not to use the party symbol, he or she needs to confirm to the party and the electoral commission so that the candidate is allocated for another symbol of his or her choice.
He said lastly, the new nomination fee is no longer $2,000 but $5,000 in full.
Saitala said previously, forms are issued for nominators to fill in but now nominations will be carried out in an electronic system.
He said the Retaining Officer for each Constituency is the responsible person to help out in filling the nominations with all the required information such as name and voter ID number.
