Brazilian dedicated win to the nation
MARIST FC Brazilian coach Juliano Schmeling pays tribute to Solomon Islanders following Marist’s 4-2 win over Rewa FC in the OFC Champions League on Sunday.
Schmeling echoed in a statement on media moments after the victory, “Thanks Marist FC and Solomon community! This victory is for you and our families”.
The Brazilian told OFC media after match, “I’m very happy for the club, Marist, and also for the Solomon Islands population,” he said.
He was pleased with his lads’ performance and highlighted the importance of a strong start to the competition.
The crucial win over Fijian side Rewa puts Marist in the driving seat to secure top spot in Group D.
Prior to the opener, Schmeling told Star Sports he was expecting a tough game but was buoyant to get the 3 points.
“There were some moments in the second half where they worried us because they’re a good team – strong and very fast.
“But today my team showed me very strong mentality,” the Brazilian tactician said.
In his post match thoughts on the game, Schmeling insisted his side made a positive start to their campaign.
“We’ve made a good first step in the competition against a very strong team who created a lot of trouble for us, but I’m happy as the final result came in our favour.”
Schmeling and company know very well a win against Erakor Golden Star on Wednesday could ease the pressure of securing a semi-final spot.
Vanuatu champions Erakor Golden Star lost their opening match 4-2 at the hands of hosts AS Tefana on Sunday.
Reports reaching Star Sports from the Marist camp in Tahiti says the opening win has contributed massively to players’ confidence as they look to see out the tournament strongly.
Marist will play Erakor Golden Star in both teams second match tomorrow.
A win will see Marist has one eye set on the semi-finals to be contested in a home and away tie in April.
