OCEANIA long distance queen, Sharon Firisua has started her Gold Coast Commonwealth journey on Monday as she heads off for the games pre-event’s training in Queensland, Australia.
Accompanying Sharon on the trip was national men’s long distance runner, Patrick Kam.
They will undergo training at the Griffith University with some of the Commonwealth’s most elite athletes.
Griffith University is the official University partner of the Games and in addition to its exceptional facilities; the University will provide support, research and analyses across a range of key areas.
Speaking from Australia yesterday, Sharon said the pre-games training is very important.
“Patrick Kam and I are here for one week training camp for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April.
“It’s a very important training because we’ll be checking our fitness level by the Griffith university sports scientists and doctor’s doing test while training,” she explained.
The most outstanding female athlete of the 2017 Pacific Mini Games is one of the medal hopefuls from the Pacific region going into the Commonwealth Games.
She won three gold medals a feat she recorded in the 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.
After her triple gold medal haul in Port Vila last December, Sharon told Star Sports she used the Mini Games as preparation for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
“Winning three gold medals in the Pacific Mini Games are always special but I am using it as a stepping stone towards the Commonwealth Games.
“I am feeling great and hope to represent my country well in Gold Coast come April,” she stated.
The national long distance golden girl will compete in the 10,000 metres, 5000 meters and likely the Half Marathon.
Meanwhile, another female Solomon Islands sports icon, Jenlyn Wini is currently training in New Caledonia and is expected to join Sharon in Australia soon.
