Non-Malaita-based Malaitans who travelled back to Malaita to register for the upcoming National General Elections (NGE) have been shocked by the reality of the poor road condition here.
In the past week, sitting candidates and intending candidates for the 2014 NGE shipped their supporters to Auki to travel on to their respective constituencies to register.
While many constituents thought their journey to their respective constituencies by public transport vehicles would not be such a terrible ordeal, their experience proved them wrong.
Solomon Star Auki caught up with some of the non-Malaita-based Malaitans and they shared their experiences.
One of them said they travelled the whole night and day to reach their registration centre and during their journey, they had to get out of the vehicle to help pull or push them through badly deteriorated stretches of the road.
“The condition of the East Road is too much and if it stays the same until the 2024 NGE, for sure some of us will not come back to cast our votes.”
“The condition of the road is risky and dangerous,” the voter said.
The same sentiments were echoed by many of those who travelled the North Road and South Road for registration.
The complainants said they can now imagine how commuters in the province have suffered from the appalling road condition and the situation would be a discouraging factor to voters who are registered to vote in Malaita in the 2024 NGE.
Some of the complainants hold the view that the situation of the road in Malaita is a clear reflection of the lack of prioritisation of road network maintenance and upgrade by the national government of the day
Some of them added that the poor road condition in Malaita should be a wakeup call for Malaitans to vote wisely in the 2024 NGE.
