THE continuous ignorance of the shops within the city has received widespread disapproval from members of the public on Thursday.
Despite the country’s 38th Independence anniversary celebrations yesterday and the day was identified as public holiday, most shops specially the Chinese ones are still operating as normal.
This has prompted numerous calls from city residents questioning why the Asians are ignorant of such a respected day in the country’s calendar.
“Those that have failed to live up to the expectations of the country deserved to be penalised.
“This is not fair for us indigenous Solomon Islanders who have respected our country’s birthday.
“Why are this people still ignorant to follow the laws of this land,” Bradley Ngitu, a concerned citizen told the Solomon Star yesterday.
Apart from Mr Ngitu’s concern, others have also called in to raise similar concern.
A female shop keeper interviewed yesterday said, they were being forced to work yesterday though she and few of her other colleagues have asked for a day off.
“Because of our request few of us are being terminated from work, we have no other options but to come to work.
“This is so unfair; we also need such time like this to celebrate with our families and friends at home,” she told the Solomon Star.
It was understood that, this practise is now normal in the city even if a public holiday is being announced.
