Solomon Islands attended the 28th Meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Council in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday, October 24th 2024.
Solomon Islands Ambassador to UAE, His Excellency Cornelius Walegerea acknowledged IRENA for their ongoing support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Solomon Islands.
At the same time, he calls on the international community to support its renewable energy needs as part of their commitment to address the impact of climate change.
Ambassador Walegerea further acknowledged the support provided by IRENA under the SIDS Lighthouse Initiative to put together a Renewable Readiness Assessment (RRA) report.
He stated, “the RRA report provide strategic opportunities for Solomon Islands to increase access to modern energy, enhance energy security, reduce energy costs, encourage participation in energy production and delivery social and economic benefits”.
Ambassador Walegerea informed the IRENA Council, that Solomon Islands looks forward to engage in strategic partnership and collaboration with the international community to provide support in the area of capacity building, technology transfer, and finance to assist the country to meet its renewable energy goals and at the same time contribute towards meeting the Climate Change National Determine Contribution (NDC) of 100% zero carbon by 2050.
