PRIME Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, has told a meeting of the heads of states and governments of the ‘Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) that Solomon Islands fully supports the organisation’s objective to push for the Adoption of Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) at the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Addressing AOSIS leaders in, New York yesterday, Prime Minister Sogavare said Solomon Islands fully supports the position taken by AOSIS.
He urged the body representing small Island states to call on the UN High Level Panel on the MVI to provide a timeline on delivery of the final report.
The Prime Minister further expressed support for the interim report adding, the high-level report must not unnecessarily delay the process.
Solomon Islands also endorsed the call to establish Funding Arrangements to address Loss and Damage at COP27. COP is the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The ‘Loss and damage’ phrase refers to the destruction already being wreaked by the climate crisis on lives, livelihoods and infrastructure. It has become a critical issue at COP 26 and will remain so at COP27.
“We support AOSIS’s call for smooth opening and adoption of the agenda with sub-item ‘Funding Arrangement for Addressing Loss and Damage at COP 27,” Mr Sogavare said.
The Prime Minister added that Solomon Islands supports the agreement to establish a new, fit-for-purpose multilateral fund for Loss and Damage, and commitment for further design and operationalisation by 2023.
Mr Sogavare told AOSIS that Solomon Islands has thrown its support behind the Vanuatu-led campaign endorsed by Forum Leaders to seek an advisory opinion on Climate Change from the International Court of Justice.
He also thanked the AOSIS Chair, Gaston Brown, for his leadership in guiding the successes achieved by AOSIS to date.
