WITH Solomon Islands hosting of the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting (PIFLM) in September 2025, Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele will play an increasingly important role in the PIF Secretariat’s agenda in the lead up to, during and after the premier regional leaders’ summit.
PM Manele highlighted this at a press conference in Honiara on Saturday to announce the cancellation of his trip to New York for the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session due to crucial agendas to deal with domestically.
He also used the opportunity to brief the media on other important issues, including preparations for the 54th PIFLM.
The PM said the 54th PIFLM is the second PIFLM to be hosted by Solomon Islands after hosting its first in 1992.
He said as the incoming hosts of the 54th PIFLM, he as Solomon Islands Prime Minister is now part of the three-member PIF Troika. The other two are the current PIF Chair, the Prime Minister of Tonga Siaosi Sovaleni and the previous chair, the Prime Minister of Cook Islands Mark Brown.
PM Manele said the PIF troika is the forum leaders’ instrument to providing support and guidance to the PIF Secretariat in between PIFLMs.
“In this regard, Solomon Islands will play an increasingly important role in relation to the Forum Secretariat’s agendas in the lead up to, during and after next year’s summit.”
