The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) says Fishery Sector has the potential to drive economic growth and job creation not only in urban centre’s but also rural area.
As the leading institution representing the country’s private sector, SICCI is optimistic about the opportunities that lie in strengthening the fishery sector.
In a statement SICCI said, Solomon Islands is an archipelago rich in sea resources that are yet to be fully utilized.
SICCI emphasizes that greater investment in infrastructure and value-added processing to fully capitalize on the nation’s fisheries sector is the best approach going forward.
“What we need to do is explore downstream processing and improve infrastructures to boost the fishery sector.
“In so doing, we can generate revenue for our economy, create more jobs, and also provide a hopeful future for our nation,” the statement says.
While acknowledges regional efforts toward securing the Blue Pacific Continent as a global model for sustainable fisheries, SICCI highlights the need for effective regulatory framework to ensure sustainable fishing practices and the protection of Pacific Islands’ marine resources.
“More focus should be on strengthening monitoring and surveillance mechanisms to safeguard the long-term viability of fisheries while promoting economic benefits for the country”.
As regional stakeholders continue working towards stronger ocean stewardship, SICCI remains committed to supporting policies and initiatives that enhance sustainable fisheries and bolster the Solomon Islands’ private sector growth.
SICCI was part of the 3 days long Honiara Summit 2025, as observer and would like to acknowledge the Solomon Islands Government with the Ministry of Fisheries and Forum Fisheries Agency and partners for hosting the international and regional institution and governments in Solomon Islands.
