THE Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (SICCI’s) Building and Construction Working Group is pushing for the approval of the National Building Code Bill.
This was highlighted during the group’s first committee meeting for this year in Honiara this month.
The aim and objectives of the proposed National Building Code Bill is to standardize building designs and construction in the country.
The proposed bill is also aimed at creating a level playing field for all local building and construction businesses to operate.
The bill awaits the reconvening of Parliament which was dissolved in December 2023 ahead of the upcoming elections this April.
Another agenda that was brought before the committee was the proposed plan to establish an Institute of Engineers and Architects.
Members agreed that the committee will revisit the position paper compiled for the establishment of the institution.
Committee members will review the position paper for the last time and put forward to SICCI Board for endorsement.
Further consultations will be facilitated with government ministries and relevant stakeholders for the implementation of the position paper.
Chairlady of the working group, Ms Namoi acknowledged the committee members who attended the meeting.
She described the meeting as successful and informative and that it has set a clear path going forward.
SICCI’s Advocacy Officer Elvis Bwa’a, who manages all the working groups, said his department will continue to support the Building and Construction Working Group with its ambitions for this year 2024.
He acknowledged the committee members for their inputs to Building and Construction Working Group’s key priorities.
