Solomon Island Council of Trade Union, (SICTU) has welcomed the announcement made by the Chair of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on the controversial COVID-19 $309 million Economic Stimulus Package (ESP)
PAC Chair, Gordon Darcy Lilo agreed to initiate hearings into the recently released Audit Report on ESP after he met with the Auditor General, David Dennis.
SICTU said this proactive step by the PAC demonstrates a commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance.
“The release of the Audit Report on the COVID-19 $309 million Economic Stimulus Package has sparked significant public outcry regarding the misuse and mismanagement of funds intended to provide much-needed economic relief.
“The decision by the PAC to launch hearings into this matter is a crucial step towards ensuring that those implicated in the report are held accountable for their actions,” SICTU said.
SICTU express sincere gratitude to the Chair of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee for recognizing the importance of addressing the concerns raised by the public and taking swift action to investigate the findings of the Audit Report.
“It is through such decisive measures that trust in our institutions can be restored and a culture of accountability nurtured.
“We look forward to the outcome of the hearings and remain hopeful that they will lead to concrete actions being taken to rectify any wrongdoings and prevent similar incidents from reoccurring in the future,” SICTU said.
In light of recent public issues of interest and importance, SICTU urge the Chairmen of esteemed public institutions such as the Leadership Code Commission (LLC), the Solomon Islands Independent Commission Against Corruption (SIICAC), and other relevant bodies, to strengthen their engagement with the public on matters that impact the general welfare and integrity of our society.
“Maintaining open lines of communication and actively seeking feedback from the public is paramount in ensuring transparency, accountability, and the proper functioning of public institutions.
“It is crucial for these organizations to demonstrate a commitment to addressing public concerns and fostering a culture of responsiveness to the needs and expectations of the citizens they serve,” SICTU said.
SICTU firmly believe that silence or lack of proactive engagement on matters of public interest is not a viable approach for public office holders and regulatory bodies.
“By engaging with the public, these institutions can build trust, gather valuable insights, and demonstrate their dedication to upholding ethical standards and promoting good governance.
“We call upon the Chairmen of these key public institutions to adopt a policy of robust engagement with the public, listen to the voices of the people, and take concrete actions to address pressing issues that impact the welfare of our society. Let us work together to strengthen the foundations of our democracy and ensure that public institutions are accountable and responsive to the needs of the people,” SICTU said.
