Solomon Islands Taekwondo debuted fighter Junior Fred Gwali won a silver medal at the Pacific Games in Samoa, Tuesday.
He settled for silver after going down to Takelo Moala Apololatu of Tonga in the grand final of the 87kg category.
Gwali lost 11-16 in the grand final to settle for the silver medal in his first-ever international appearance.
According to information received from the Taekwondo team delegation in Samoa, Gwali is the only fighter who managed a medal in the first day of the competition.
Taekwondo coach Derrick Afu confirmed the win yesterday to Star Sports and said Gwali fought a good fight and the team is proud of his achievement.
Other four national male fighters lost narrowly to their opponents and failed to settle for medals.
Two male fighters Junior Maetia and Issac Pat and the girls’ team will fight today.
The male fighters who lost their bouts and Gwali will now team up for the team fight which will take place after the individual bouts.
The country’s Taekwondo teams to the Pacific Games are looking forward to collect some more medals today as Taekwondo competition enters day two.
