MINISTER of Communication & Aviation and Member of Parliament for Central Guadalcanal, Peter Shanel Agovaka says the SIM card registration is good for all citizen and not only for government leaders.
He stated this in response to the statement made by the member of east Are’are, Peter Kenilorea Jr who spoke against the sim registration endorsed by the government.
Minister Agovaka said he strongly condemned the statement made by the east Are’are MP who said the SIM card registration amended by the government were only to protect themselves.
Speaking during the sine die motion last Friday, the Minister said he strongly condemned this statement.
“Any law that is made in this round house, in the parliament of Solomon Islands is made to protect all citizen, all Solomon Islanders and those who reside in our country from abroad.
“Therefore, the SIM card registration is for all, no exception,” he said.
Agovaka in explaining the importance of SIM registration has refer back to a story of a young Solomon Islands student who just return from the Philippines and committed suicide as a result of the negative comments from face book users.
“See this young man took his own life because of the negative comments on his personal life that came from face book users.
“So, those people who made these negative comments were promoting the death of this young man,” he said.
The minister explained SIM card registration is a step towards ensuring that persons using telecommunication services can be held accountable for their actions.
Thus, he said face book can be dangerous, and if we are not registered those SIM card, we cannot catch these people through our police investigation.
