THE Solomon Islands Postal Corporation (SIPC) yesterday launched the country’s Postcode and Addressing system project which will allow the country to have an organized Postcode and addressing system, a lynchpin for e-Commerce and the connecting of Solomon Islands residents to the rest of the world.
At launching ceremony staged at the SIPC Carpark, the SIPC Board Chairman James Apaniai said, “today marks a milestone in the efforts of this nation to take its place amongst other nations in establishing a national addressing & post code system for itself.
“The importance of developing such a system cannot be overstated. It is important for E-Commerce which in turn, is vital for economic development of a nation,” Mr Apaniai underscored.
“The national addressing & postcode systems provide the most compact data element capable of specifying with precision the location of any address.
“They are concerned with identifying a country and Geographical locations to which goods and messages can be delivered. They are important for connecting the citizens to each other and to the rest of the world.
“From the postal perspective, postal addresses and address standards are essential for automation and clarity in delivery processes to homes, offices, buildings and post office boxes,” he added.
Mr Apaniai added that having postcode and national addressing systems will also allow postal services to be efficient and swift.
He acknowledged that the success of this project groundwork to both the Ministry of Communication and Aviation and SIPC as well as others who have also played important roles in its progression.
Mr Apaniai said the project was long overdue and thus the launching yesterday was a indeed milestone achievement.
The project was launched in the presence of the Caretaker Minister of Communication & Aviation Peter Shanel Agovaka and MCA staff; Members of the Diplomatic Corp, Permanent Secretaries and other Senior Government officials, SIPC staff and board members as well as the management and staff of State-Owned Enterprises.
