GOVERNOR GENERAL, Sir Frank Kabui says creation of jobs through development of industries and services is an essential element the country needs in order to prosper ecumenically and socially.
Sir Frank highlighted this while addressing graduating students of Don Bosco Training Institute in Honiara last week.
Sir Frank was the guest of honour during the graduation ceremony.
The Governor General encouraged students who have attended the training institute and graduated in various disciplines of trade knowledge and skills to utilise their acquired knowledge in nation building.
Sir Frank said the country needs people with knowledge and skills become industrious by utilising what they have learnt in establishing new industries and services.
He said these developments are paramount because they create jobs which in turn provide employment to many unemployed young people in the country.
“In order for the country to prosper economically, new investment must be encouraged at all levels of the society.”
He said such development will form the base for creation of employment opportunities for the large unemployed population.
Earlier statistics showed about 20 percent of the population of Solomon Islands is employed while 80 percent is unemployed.
The high unemployment trend is dictated by the lack of jobs available in the job market.
Sir Frank reminded the grandaunts that it is everyone’s duty to build this country by contributing in one way or another in engaging in economic development activities conducive to creating jobs.
He said this is a massive but an important task, Government and the private sector alone cannot do it on their own.
He said individual entrepreneurs can make an enormous impact which can make a difference by creating employment opportunities to their fellow men and women.
Sir Frank said when money is circulated through employment both in urban and rural areas; it will stimulate economic activities and help improve the livelihood of many people.
