President of the Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation (SIRUF) Frank Wickham says the 2016 Solomon Games rugby competitions have been very successful.
Wickham echoed the sentiment at the closing of the rugby 7s competition on Friday at the Panatina rugby oval.
“I would like to thank all teams who came to compete in this Solomon Games rugby competition.
“I am very excited to see the involvement of our provincial players who came and compete in this tournament,’’ he said.
He stressed the participation of provincial teams has indicated that rugby is developing in the country.
Wickham said SIRUF has more exciting events lined up for this year for rugby lovers.
He also said as part of further developing the sport, SIRUF is planning to bring in a Fijian coach to help local coaches.
“SIRUF is negotiating with a Fijian coach to come and assist Solomon Islands coaches,’’ he said.
President Wickham also urged all provincial rugby associations to continue to promote the sport in their provinces.
He also called for more women’s participation in rugby.
“Please encourage our young girls and women to come and join rugby,’’ he said.
