The Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) is appealing to social media users to be mindful and responsible when posting things on social media.
The RSIPF in a statement said posting deliberate false information on social media will only cause more panic and fear in communities.
Police made this appeal as more social media accounts posted and share false contents relating to alleged attempted abduction and kidnaping in the city.
“Posting crafted disinformation contents can be risky as it will cause fear and hatred in the communities.”
The RSIPF also noted that some social media users are so irresponsible by sharing contents that are not entirely true which only worsen the situation.
Police Commissioner Mostyn Mangau said spreading contents that are not true is an offence and Police will investigate those involved in fear-mongering activities.
He also appealed to victims of abduction and kidnaping claims to go to the nearest police station and report the matter to the police instead.
“Reporting these matters to the police will help us to verify information and, where necessary, cause investigation in order to bring those responsible to justice,” Commissioner Mangau added.
