THE 2020 Solomon Cup champions, the Western Tomoko were given a heroic farewell on Sunday morning when they left Honiara onboard MV Fair Glory.
Hundreds of supporters, fans, and families of the players and officials were at the wharf to bid the team farewell on their return voyage.
Many more fans and supporters also joined the trip. Many of them are heading to their respective islands to spend Christmas and New Year.
Prior to Fair Glory’s departure, the players and officials celebrated their victory by displaying the cup from the wheelhouse as fans chanted and took a turn for a photo opportunity.
The boat departed at 9 am.
Sunday’s trip has taken the team through eight Western ports from the Marovo lagoon all the way to the provincial capital Gizo.
A spokesperson for the Western Football Association (WFA) told Star Sports over the weekend that the victory has created a history for the province.
After more than 29 years, the province was able to write its name on the Solomon Cup’s history book as a champion of the competition, the official said.
He acknowledged the hard work of the newly elected WFA plus the new coaching management under the leadership of Seri Hite for a positive result.
The official described the victory as the best ever Christmas gift for the people of Western Province.
He also acknowledged God for supporting their team.
Reports reaching Star Sports last night said there was a huge celebration as soon as the team berths at Bunikalo, Gasini, Chea, and Seghe.
The celebration continues at Ughele, Noro, Ringi this morning before arriving in Gizo.
A huge welcome ceremony and celebration are expected in Gizo today once the team arrives.
The boat is expected to make a few runs around Gizo Habour as part of the celebration.
Western Tomoko claimed the title after beating the defending champion Malaita Eagles by a goal to nil.
