SOLOMON Islanders living in New Zealand are celebrating the 2023 Solomon Islands Language week this week.
The theme for the event is, “Lanem langus blo iu, mekem iu savve long kalsa blo iu” which in English means “Learn your language to know your cultures.”
The event commenced on Monday with an opening devotion and was witnessed by a number of guests, report reaching Solomon Star said.
The guests included PMN Solomons, Trixy Ubnul, Miss New Zealand, Georgia Waddington, Miss Cook Islands, Tajiya Sahay, an Aotearoa Community Leader, Mii Teariki and North Island Youth Representative of the Zambian Community leading up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, Diana Simumtande.
The annual Solomon Islands language week is aimed at promoting Solomon Islands cultures and languages, especially pijin, amongst members of the Solomon Islands community and those who have blood connections with Solomon Islands.
Since the opening of the event, there has been overwhelming support from Solomon Islanders across New Zealand.
The event also coincides with the country’s 45th independence celebration tomorrow.
At the opening of the programme, Miss New Zealand – Ms Waddington, gave support to the Solomon Islands Community as they gathered to mark the commencement of the event.
Solomon Islanders are given the chance to speak in pijin on radio broadcasts as part of the programme.
The programme is also marked with cultural performances from members of the Solomon Islands community.
There are also displays of local artifacts and a Solomon Islands woman is also showcasing her skills in basket-weaving.
The event will end this weekend.
