TWO weeks after raising more than $503,000 to support their old school, work has began on the Selwyn College students’ laundry and toilet facilities.
Today, the first batch of materials that will cater for the boys’ three and girls’ two laundries have been transported to the school on West Guadalcanal for work to start on Tuesday.
On hand to see the transport of the materials were chairman of Selwyn College Old Scholars Association (SOSA) Selwyn Kole and Anglican Church of Melanesia’s Education Secretary Desmond Waita.
Former Selwyn College students, also known as SOSA, celebrated 46th Anniversary of their school last month and raised funds via contributions from former students according to their years (1970 to 2016).
Just one night, they raised $503,000 which has been prioritized to go towards the repair of the students sanitation facilities.
Chairman of the 46th Anniversary Committee Robert Iroga said this was a great achievement and the half-a-million-dollar contribution from SOSA members was a manifestation of their close affection with their school.
The former students came in droves to donate to Selwyn College ranging from $100 to $60,000.
“I take this opportunity to thank all SOSA members who have contributed towards achieving the huge amount of money,” he said.
Mr Iroga said as he had reiterated most of the time, the money would be well accounted for and it would be used for the purpose it was raised.
He said for the first time the students sanitation would be improved since the school was built 26 years and that’s a massive achievement.
The tripartite committee which includes SOSA, ACOM (Selwyn College) and Parents has selected former student and qualified plumber Jimson Pwalo and his team to carry out the plumbing work at the school.
Work on the girls’ facilities should complete later this week and the boys will be done soon after that.
