A FIVE kilometer marathon race was successfully held at the Barakoma airfield, ward 7 in Southeast Vella, Western Province over the weekend.
The competition was organised on Saturday for runners of Gizo White Eye Club and Southeast Vella Athletics Club.
Officials and trainers for both clubs witnessed the race as part at the upgraded Barakoma Airstrip.
Gizo White Eye Trainer Nelson Tara said, the competition was purposely to test the runners in fixed and accurate timing.
“Clocking and timing is very important during the competition.”
He said, following the competition top runners will be drafted into a team that will join the Athletics Runners Club for Western Province.
He said, final selection of the traveling squad will be done in Gizo sometimes this month.
He said the competition is part of preparing the athletes for the April Easter Road Race to be held in Honiara on 3rd April.
He added following the outcome of the race, the officials were generally pleased with the performance of the runners.
“We hope that after participating during the Easter Road Race, our players can be selected for the coming 2023 Pacific Games,” he said.
