THE Solomon Islands Scouts and Coastwatchers (SSCW) celebrated 13 Years of ‘Pride of Our Nation’ monument which led to the honoring and awarding of medallions to SSCW and their families.
The 13th Anniversary of the ‘Pride of Our Nation’ Commemoration Service was marked on Wednesday at Commonwealth Street.
Governor General Reverend David Tiva Kapu and Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele attended the ceremony to pay tribute to the now deceased heroes, who fought alongside the United States Marines and Allied Forces during World War II.
Chairperson of SSCW Trust Board, Sir Bruce Saunders said it was after the monument was built that the families of the SSCW received medallions in recognition for the service of their loved ones to the nation.
The medallions were minted in Australia.
“Today is the 13th Anniversary of the dedication of this Solomon Islands Scouts and Coastwatchers Trust monument.
“It was dedicated in 2011 by then Solomon Islands Governor General Sir Frank Kabui.
“The interesting thing about this monument is that it is designed, created and built by a Solomon Islander.
“His name is Frank Haikui,” he said.
Sir Bruce said Mr Haikui came up with this idea to honor what the SSCW for their service to the country during World War II.
“We acknowledge Frank Haikui today,” he said.
Haikui is still alive but too frail to attend the commemorative event.
Set up at the Commonwealth Street, the monument stands the test of time.
After the dedication of the monument in 2011, the SSCW Trust Board started honouring Solomon Scouts and Coastwatchers until today.
Since 2011, over 80 family members of Solomon Islands Scouts have received medallions for their service.
