LOCAL businesses, including tourism operators, and schools in remote parts of the country are starting to see the benefits of Starlink’s satellite internet service.
Since being granted an operational license in 2024, Starlink is set to become a game-changer for communities previously plagued by unreliable and slow internet service.
Residents and businesses in rural parts of the country have reported significant improvements in their daily operations and quality of life.
They have expressed that Starlink is proving itself to be a fast, cheap and reliable alternative internet service provider.
“Before the entry of Starlink in the local telecommunication market, we would experience days without internet service or unstable internet connectivity,” the owner of a small eco-lodge in the Western Province said.
“Now, our guests can easily access Wi-Fi and we can manage our bookings online without stress,” he added.
The impact of Starlink extends beyond mere connectivity as it is opening doors to new opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
“Businesses can now sell their products on-line, attracting more customers than ever before.
“Schools, which previously struggled to provide digital learning resources, are now equipped with good internet service and students accessing online studies.
“Tourism operators, a vital component of the national economy, are experiencing a revival with Starlink helping them promote their services more effectively.
“Now we are now able to share real-time experiences and updates on social media, attracting more visitors. We can post stunning pictures and tell stories that draw tourists,” the small eco-lodge owner said.
Few local shipping services are also providing free wifi onboard their vessels allowing their passengers to enjoy internet while traveling.
The service offers various subscription plans that cater for different needs, ensuring that even small enterprises can afford to stay connected.
The Telecommunication Commission Solomon Islands (TCSI) granted Starlink Solomon Islands Limited its class license in August 2024, allowing it to engage in telecommunications services in the country.
Starlink is a satellite internet constellation operated by Starlink Services, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of American aerospace company SpaceX, providing coverage to 102 countries. The subsidiary is owned by Elon Musk, a South African-born American entrepreneur.
