STUDENTS studying at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) have raised their concern over the slowness of computer services at the Kukum campus.
They said that the problem started early this year when a window system was installed.
The programme reqiures a registered student ID number and full name in order to access other installed computer services.
Students who are registered with $20 are able to use the computers.
The students said that they are not able to hand in their assignments on time due to the inconsistency of the network system.
A business administration student, Selwyn Bila said that the local university should not have such problem, which create preventable hardship for students who need to finish their assignments in time.
‘’It’s not good to experience such on and off network and power at the Computer lab,” Mr Bila said.
‘’The university shouldn’t experience such failure because its very important for students to finish assignments on time,” he added.
“Administration should also provide more desktop computers to make the service more reliable.’’
Mr Bila also revealed that other students who are not financially registered have access to other students ID numbers.
He stressed that the practice causes needless difficulties for students who pay for the services.
“Some of the students had stolen other students’ ID numbers and passwords,” Mr Bila claimed.
“They decrease the percentage of time allocated to those who had spent their money in order to access the computers.
“It’s not fair that I pay for the account while others have free access.’’
Meanwhile, second year secretarial students, shaniella Lisi and Samao John Mark, also support Mr Liba’s concern.
“We’re not able to log in to the program because of continueous network problem,” Ms Samao said.
“We are also not able to start a new page in order to do our assignments,” she added.
“Last year’s system was best because we don’t need to login while the new system made things more complicated,” she added.
A spokesperson for SINU’s computer lab said the responsible IT people are working on addressing the situation.
She added the construction of a bigger computer lab is also progressing.
