The continuous absenteeism experienced by Honiara High school form six students have forced the students to raise their concern.
The group of students told this paper that they missed a lot of class lessons due to claims, some of their subject teachers are continuously missing classes.
“This practise happened after the April flash flood.”
With their upcoming exams next month, the students said there is a lot of catching up that needs to be done.
“We need to catch up with some of our topics and do extra works.
“Because this ongoing lack of classes really affects us and our studies,” said the concerned students.
“People always blame students for their education without realising that teachers’ absenteeism is a major issue that affect students in many schools,” said the concerned group of students.
Speaking to the paper principal for Honiara High senior school Fono Maetia said the school is under the authority of Honiara city council and all the laws and regulations are under their rule.
He attributed lack of staff houses as a major problem facing his teachers.
“Teachers cannot sleep under the tree to prepare lessons for their classes because we are living in the city where everyone needs proper shelter before doing their work.
“Crowdedness in classes is also a problem that brings headache to the teachers.”
Mr Maetia said Honiara High is a senior school where teachers only conduct tutorials during class time and students cannot be spoon fed all the time.
“They cannot wait to be spoon fed by the teacher to other schools and that’s why the school only focused on forms four to form seven,” the school boss said.
Mr Maetia urged the students to be patient with the school management in order to sort out the problems.
