AROUND 100 day-scholar students at Solomon Islands National University (SINU) have called on the director of National Training Unit (NTU) to explain the drop in their allowances last week.
According to cheques received by the students, from the gross of $24,570, the government withheld $945 for rental.
As such, the students each received only $23,625.
One of the students who asked not to be named she wanted an explanation from the director because they planned to claim the remaining amount next month.
The student said from feedback they got from an officer at NTU, the money was deducted for house rental.
However, the student said they have been living off campus and not subjected to any rentals.
“We really need further explanation from the director to clear this issue,” the student said.
Attempt to talk to NTU director, Clement Tito, was unsuccessful yesterday.
However, one of the NTU officers said the money was withheld by the Ministry of Finance as tax.
