Solomon Islands students study at various universities at Fiji paid tribute to children, families, men and women who lost their lives in the April 3 flash flood during a memorial service at Laucala campus on Sunday.
The memorial service began with a minute silence, national anthem and laying of wreaths by representatives of Laucala, FNU, FSM and Solomon Islands Embassy in Fiji.
Reflecting on the event of flash flood Vice President of Solomon Islands Student Association Clayton Tuimaka said Solomon Islands suffered one of the worst floods in the history of the country.
He said as some who has grown up along the Mataniko river side he personally wants to pay tribute to men, women, children and families who lost their lives.
He said people lived along the river because they love their country.
“They love their country in bad times and in good times and the event of flash flood was one of the bad times we suffered,” he said.
Mr Tuimaka said in time of such disaster it is important we work in partnership with God to address the issue together.
