The national government should sponsor more students to study at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) as part of its support for the institution.
SINU Students Association (SINU SA) rep Mathew Jones made the suggestion after the government announced names of those who will study under government scholarship last week.
Jones said while he acknowledge the government’s announcement of the scholarship recipients, he noted most of them are going to study abroad.
“I believe the government should take pride of SINU but sponsoring more students to study here,” Jones said.
“But doing that, the government not only ensures more students are supported in their education, but also indirectly supports SINU through the payment of fees,” he added.
“We appreciate the way huge number scholarships were awarded this year, but on the other hand, SINU offers some of the certificates, diploma, and even bachelor programs here where lots of students have to do it abroad; especially Bachelor in accounting which was readily available here.”
Jones said the government should invest more into SINU than universities abroad.
“This way, it would show that the government is taking pride in its own established institution, as well as it a great way to save money.
“It does not look right when it established a university but spend its money outside.”
More than 300 students have been allocated government scholarships this year.
