RESIDENTS of Suava Bay in north Malaita have experienced a surge in mosquito bites following recent heavy rain in the area.
A villager John Tabusu said the situation was quite unusual because they never experienced that before.
“We don’t experience this since we were brought up here, but started last month after heavy rainfall continued up until today, we experienced an increase in mosquito bites,” he said.
“It was really annoying especially at night,” he added.
Mr Tabusus said this might be a clear sign of this El Nino season that causes the changes in the weather pattern, thus brought them into unusual situations that are new to them.
He further stated that unpredictable rainfall in Suava continues on and off every day and night, causing their swamp areas to fill with water, which in turn disturb mosquito’s habitats.
“We are hoping that this irritating presence of mosqitos should be end anytime soon, because we are afraid our children might contract any new sickness related to these mosquito bites,” Mr Tabusu said.
