MALAITA Premier has accused government of failing the country big time by not protecting its borders and turning a blind eye on Malaita Outer Islands (MOI) and Tasman border in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Daniel Suidani issued the statement in the light of the Covid-19 community transmission in Pelau.
So far six cases have been detected after foreigners from Tasman illegally entered the country early last week.
While the premier appreciates the effort by the government through Covid-19 nationwide vaccination, he said the government cannot overlook the danger of illegal border crossing when fighting this deadly virus.
From observation, the premier said the government only prioritizes the Western-Bougainville border while turning a blind eye on other potential border entries like the MOI-Tasman border.
The Malaita Premier is of the view that Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Patrol Boats should be patrolling the borders and on the lookout for illegal border crossers to keep the country safe the risk of Covid-19.
The Premier then quickly pointed to the one that is berthing at Auki wharf for the past 10 days saying this particular Patrol Boat should have been deployed to MOI in the past weeks to monitor the border.
“If the RSIPF Patrol Boats were put into good use by stationing one at the MOI-Tasman borders, the people of MOI would not have to deal with the current situation,” which he believes now poses death threat and fear to the good people of MOI.
The premier is now calling on responsible authorities to quickly attend to the situation in MOI to have it under control.
Its understood government has taken a swift action to deploy additional resources and personnel to MOI.
