Our Telekom is wrapping up its tower launching programs around Malaita Province this week.
The final two towers were launched were Rota and Upeni towers in small Malaita.
Our Telekom has constructed 14 towers around the province and had been busy launching them over the past months.
On Monday this week, a Telekom delegation launched the Rota tower – 15 kilometers from Afio.
On Wednesday, they launched the tower at Upeni in Tarapaena village.
One of the Telekom officers at Afio Rex Aega said the two are the last of the 14 towers that were installed last year in the province.
He said that the two towers were supposed to be launched early this month but due to some issues between landowners and the company, the unveiling was prolonged.
“The launching of the service had brought changes to the rural communities,” a chief from Rota village said.
Chief John Hou during the launching at Rota said many of these communities have been without communication service for years.
“In the past, we have to walk more than 15 kilometers to Afio to make a call and it was really hard.
“But with the service now at hand, people in the area can now make calls from within their homes.
“This is a new beginning in terms of communication development and we will continue to work together with our Telekom for further developments that can benefit people.”
He telekom officer Mr Aega on behalf of the company thanked the landowners and assured them that Our Telekom will work with them to offer more services like internet and other services to help boost the rural communities.
