DEAR EDITOR – Thank you for this time to share an important matter relating to internet and mobile pornography which is now becoming destructive to the minds of our kids and people of Solomon Islands.
Solomon Islands in this twenty first century is becoming a nation which is enjoying the best of modern telecommunication technology.
Telecommunication has brought within the reach of each person the ability to communicate with ease.
No longer do we need to wait for weeks or months to communicate with people of other lands. It is just a matter of seconds and your voice is there and hers is right in your ears.
“Hello dear, when are you coming back?, asked the spouse. In less than a minute, her spouse who happened to travel overseas on an overseas conference replied saying, “Honey, I will probably return next week Tuesday on the Air Pacific flight from Fiji, if not on the waiting list. Don’t worry, I’ll be right there beside you through the mobile. Take care of our kids. I’ll bring you chocolates and sweeties. Please don’t forget to do the laundary.”
A sample of spouse communicating overseas with her hubby who has gone on a government conference.
Telecommunication is becoming part of our lives. Without it business, government, the private sector and a whole lot of organisations including individuals would not be able to communicate with other parties who may be living over great distances.
It is one of the marvels of modern society. It is an agent of growth and national development. This is one positive side of telecommunication which we all love.
However, just like other things in the world, there is also a negative side. Telecommunication is so useful in delivering voice, pictures, data and information electronically over distances that it can also create problems for people, communities and the nation as a whole.
This is where the role of the government is extremely important. The government has to be very vigilant to ensure that telecommunication does not harm the lives of the very people whom it is attempting to govern.
When Solomon Islands decided to go into telecom competition, there was no legislation to control internet pornography.
Internet pornography is becoming a very big problem in Solomon Islands today. Young people, married and even some old people are becoming addicted to it.
The telecommunication companies are selling a lot of mobile phones in Honiara and the urban centres to enable people to communicate easily but with it also comes the ‘poison’ of pornography.
What is pornography? Pornography can be described as the collection of pictures of naked men and women performing sexual intercourse.
It can also include men or women performing sex acts with other creatures like animals or even man made technology.
Why are we saying these? It is important that we teach the negative side of telecommunication and how to manage the access of information and data into our mobiles and computers.
If Solomon Islands is a Christian country then why are we entertaining telecom pornography? We must not turn aside from this question.
Firstly, we have to understand that one of the ways in which the telecom business desires to sell its products quickly is to use pornography as a form of entertainment. It loves to transmit pornography through the telecommunication system.
Sexual acts are very interesting to people especially the young. Anything which interests people, they would be flocking to it and offer money to receive it.
Mobile pornography is becoming a great form of entertainment for even kids, the young, married men and the old.
Where is the justice and rightousness Christians of Solomon Islands once have? What is the current government doing about pornography?
What is the Telecom Commission of Solomon Islands doing about the pornography that is hurting the young minds?
No wonder we are having more rapes and indecency going on with in the nation than any time in our history…!
As a nation that is battling the wickedness and immorality which is now being turned into sheer entertainment we need to reconsider our telecommunication competition legislation.
We could come up with a few suggestions for the next government to reconsider so that Solomon Islands could clean up the pornographic dirt which is now flooding the minds of our people.
The following suggestions need to be considered by our people and the next government so that a legislation to control telecom pornography is put into place:
(1) The Telecommunication Commission of Solomon Islands in partnership with the next government to come up with a legislation to control telecom internet pornography. Currently the Commission is very silent and encouraging porn. Why…?
(2) Telecommunication companies to be transparent and to inform the public about the dangers of telecom pornography.
(3) The government to give the public and the churches a chance to bring suggestions and comments before establishing a legislation to control or to eliminate if possible telecommunication pornography.
The churches and organisations like SICA or SIFGA should be on the forefront of fighting against telecom pornography using the tools and the weapons which God the Almighty has already given us.
If Solomon Islands and her people remain silent regarding telecom pornography, then it is an idication that it loves to hurt the minds and the hearts of her people.
What we want is a new legislation to control pornography. What do you think folks? If our eyes cause us to do wrong things, ‘pluck them out’ by enacting a legislation to control telecommunication pornography.
Beware the devil is like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Have a blessed day.
