Former deputy premier of Temotu Province, Malachi Mekano urges the people of Temotu to choose leaders with strong ambitions to lead the provincial assembly.
In an interview with the Sunday Star, Mekano said Temotu Province needs leaders with vision and determination to lead the province.
Mekano said in the past former Provincial leaders and the Executive government have executed services in the interest of their people.
He said this scenario is no longer the case today.
He alleged political leaders now only care about serving themselves and their cronies.
He claimed during his time in the 90’s the then provincial executive served the interests of the people of Temotu.
He said the current executive government only served their personal interests.
He cited some of the decisions made by the sitting provincial government regarding economic development in the province, which he claimed was based on personal interest rather than public interest.
He said it is irresponsible of the previous premier, Johnson Levela’s government to amend the Environment and Conservation Ordinance, which allow for unscrupulous investors to enter the province.
He urged the new government and premier to seriously consider sustainable development in their development policies.
“Logging and mining must not be allowed into the province because these are destructive forms of development Mekano said.He called on the current provincial executive to impose a total ban on logging in the province.
Mekano also wanted the current executive to liaise with the national government to provide proper facilities for the Lata hospital.
“Temotu is far from Honiara; therefore it is important Lata hospital must be well equipped with facilities to ensure some cases can be treated in Lata rather than referring every case to Honiara,” he said.
He added Lata hospital needs experienced nurses and doctors to ensure quality services are delivered.
