TEMPORARY maintenance work on the deteriorated road in the Malaita Provincial Capital Auki is now underway.
The state of the Auki Road network has worsened over the years, making travelling unpleasant, time-consuming and risky.
The road works commenced weeks after the opening of the political campaigning period.
A private road construction company JED is carrying out the temporary maintenance work on roads in Auki to improve road services whilst the provincial township awaits the implementation of the China-funded Auki Road Tar-sealing Project.
The temporary road maintenance works started from southern part of the township and will progressively extend to the western end. It involves mainly road levelling and the filling up of pot holes.
However, the temporary road maintenance work does not go down well with members of the Auki public as they rather want to see the tar-sealing project commence.
A Malaita Provincial Government Senior Works Officer told Solomon Star yesterday that the temporary road maintenance works was just part of the preparation for the major Auki Road Tar sealing Project.
The officer said this is to allow vehicles, especially those providing public transport services, to continue their service whilst the tar-sealing project is yet to be implemented.
“The current temporarily road maintenance work in Auki township is just part of the preparation for the major China-funded Auki Road Tar-sealing Project.”
