GOVERNMENT through the Ministry of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace (MNURP) has handed over equipment to Tetere Correctional Centre.
UNDP Human Security Trust Fund (HSTF) funded the equipment under the Ministry of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace.
The equipment included, tables, chairs, cabinet, computer set, printer, tonors, kitchens utensils, Pprojector, A4 ctn rim papers.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony Permanent Secretary Lennis Rukale said, the handing was the final under the program.
He said, the handing over of equipment started in December 2014 at the Auki Correctional Centre in Malaita followed by the Christian Care Centre, the Mental Health Division of the Youth Division of the Honiara City Council and lately at the Rove Central Correctional Centre, Honiara.
Also under the HSTF Project in partnership with the Ministry, it has also facilitated training of trauma support workers to help build lives to normal trauma recovery and peaceful co-existence in our affected communities.
“We are grateful that the Joint UN Initiative has been established to support and empower communities in Solomon Islands with specific focus on empowering affected communities through the improvement of local governance and community participation and successful post-conflict recovery of affected communities through the promotion of human security and co-existence, with a view to preventing a recurrence of violent “tensions” in future.
He firmly believed that with these gifts it will enhance gradual improvement of social rehabilitation services at Tetere Correctional Centre as a foundation for peaceful reintegration of inmates into social life after their discharge from the respective correctional centre.
Under the Ministry strategic objective 5 of its Annual Work Plan has been mandated to strengthen National peacebuilding partnership through the relevant capacity building and development, therefore, in partnership with the UNDP through the Human Security initiative for tension reduction, reconciliation and rehabilitation in Solomon Islands has been entrusted by the Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace to support local initiatives for peaceful co-existence in the communities that were affected by the ethnic crisis.
PS thanked Commandant of Tetere Correctional Centre and officers for accepting these gifts and has confident that the equipment are placed in good and safe hands which will last their purposes for a long time to come.
Also UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Ms. Akiko Suzaki wished Tetere Correctional Centre and the Ministry of National Unity, Reconciliation and Peace all success in the undertaking to promote the sustainable and peaceful co-existence in Solomon Islands, which will become a platform to anchor development and prosperity for the future generations.
Meanwhile, Tetere Correctional Centre Commanded Superintendent William Aheia on behalf of the staff and inmates thanked the Ministry and UNDP for the support.
“This equipment is very important and pride to the correctional centre.”
This equipment will help boost the work performance of the correctional staff at the centre.
