Dear Editor – Monday evening, I went to our national domestic port to wait for my wantoks. While waiting I noticed a vehicle driving recklessly through the not so crowded domestic port road, thank heavens not a lot of people were there.
The reckless driver almost hit a car, screeched to a halt and then sped towards the exit near Low Price enterprise that two SIPA security officers were manning.
They shut the boom gate and gave no order for the vehicle to pass.
From the driver seat emerged quite a large person and he motioned a wave of apology to the security officers, who were still unaware that the driver was drunk.
The driver of the vehicle in a loud but controlled voice said, “Mi owner blo ship ya” and that was when a security personnel stood up and said “No matter you owner blo ship, but mifala no countim you. How na if you bangem die wanfala man lo hia? You garem selen for paim life blo hem?”
From small mumblings in the crowd that the vehicle had raged through came cries “No letem hem go!”, “Callem Police for hem!”, “Holem man ya!” “No ples for speed ya, Oketa woman and pikinini na save wakabaot lo hia”.
I am not sure of what happened next because a few minutes later, the ship I was waiting for was about to dock and so I went on to help my wantoks carry their cargo.
But, this thought still lingered in my mind.
‘These are the unsung heroes who do a lot of good and no one thank them for it’.
Well today my friend I thank you and the SIPA security team for the very brave effort in standing up for your fellow working class people and never giving in to the tycoon like behaviour of the drunk ship owner.
May God Bless you and keep up the good work.
