IN a realm where business and spirituality are commonly seen as distinct, Dr Ken Long, author of The Model Steward Canvas, introduces a ground-breaking concept that unites them – business and spirituality.
Originating from a programme on business, innovation and discipleship in Papua New Guinea in December 2019, Dr Long and his colleague Christina Hawkins delivered a session to local Christian entrepreneurs, sparking interest by challenging preconceived notions and highlighting the potential of aligning business with faith.
The inspiration for The Model Steward Canvas arose from the realisation that many Christians, particularly in developing countries, lack the business skills to thrive in entrepreneurship.
This canvas aims to empower people to launch businesses with a Kingdom purpose, benefiting themselves, their families, communities and God’s Kingdom.
While on a tour to Honiara late last month, Ken Long presented these concepts to a group of Seventh-day Adventist entrepreneurs.
For those passionate about God’s kingdom and integrating faith into business, The Model Steward Canvas is invaluable. This one-page business plan guides entrepreneurs through essential elements, addressing both practical and spiritual aspects often overlooked.
It’s a practical tool for starting a Kingdom-focused business, transitioning from informal to formal ventures, or infusing existing businesses with intentional Kingdom values.
The canvas comprises twelve elements presented visually, covering vision, mission, values, customer segments, value proposition, goals, stakeholders, partners, resources, staff management and financial approaches.
The Scriptural Imperative, a guiding verse for business interactions, is crucial. Stewardship, responsibly managing resources bestowed by God, holds great significance in today’s world, encompassing time, talents, finances, influence, and businesses.
Although Jesus never explicitly claimed to be the Model Steward, His life exemplified stewardship principles. The Model Steward Canvas challenges entrepreneurs to run businesses with these principles, emphasising an abundance mindset, sacrificial giving, selfless service and compassion.
This canvas is not just a business tool; it transforms Christian entrepreneurs. By embracing stewardship principles and aligning with Kingdom values, entrepreneurs can impact communities, employees, suppliers, customers, and God’s Kingdom.
Dr Long’s book serves as a roadmap for integrating faith and business, showcasing entrepreneurship as a powerful instrument for God’s glory.
