In a sea tragedy in East Fataleka, Malaita
Three persons have reportedly died at sea in north east Malaita after the boat they were travelling in capsized in rough seas on Saturday afternoon.
Amongst the deceased are one woman, one elderly man and one middle aged man.
The group returned after mourning the death of a relative from East Fataleka when they met rough sea on their way back to East Kwaio.
According to information reaching this paper, there were eight people on-board the OBM when it took off from East Fataleka from a village called Maku between 3pm and 4pm last Saturday afternoon.
The eight people on-board are from Kwai Ngogosila and Cainaan village in East Kwaio and the boat is also from Cainaan.
Information received stated that, the group were attending the funeral of a relative in East Fataleka on Wednesday last week and were returning home when they meet rough seas at Maku point as they tried to make their way to the open sea heading further East to Cainaan.
Five people survived after a World Vision boat stationed at Kwai Island received an emergency rescue call and rushed to their rescue.
On Saturday afternoon, they managed to recover two dead bodies, the body of a woman who is believed to be from Fataleka and an elderly man who is believed to be from Cainaan village in East Kwaio and five survivors but one body is still missing.
On Sunday morning, a joint search and rescue team from the surrounding communities managed to locate the body of the missing person who was believed to be from Kwai Ngogosila, but unfortunately he was dead by the time they recovered his body.
Information reaching this paper stated that, it was lucky that the World Vision boat arrived while five others were still alive and saved their lives otherwise the death toll could have increased.
