Intruder assaults acting principal, causes damage

SECURITY has been tightened yesterday at state-owned King George Sixth School after an outsider entered the school and allegedly assaulted the interim principal and caused damages to properties.
The alleged assault came in the wake of the Ministry of Education’s decision to suspend the school’s principal Samuel Fangata and his deputy Johnny Tasa this week over alleged misappropriation of school funds.
An eye-witness told the Solomon Star yesterday the intrusion, assault, and damages were all related to the decision to suspend the principal and his deputy.
“The intruder, who was apparently drunk, entered the school compound at around 4am and shouted abuse while causing damages to school properties,” the eye-witness said.
“He was retaliating in response to the suspension of the two school heads,” the eye witness said.
One student said the incident traumatised them.
“We were still asleep when we heard damages and noises in the school compound,” the student said.
Later in the morning, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development Dr Franco Rodie visited the school and assured the students, security will be tightened during the weekend.
“We have talked about the situation and decided that teachers will reconcile with the suspended principal as demanded by his relative who come and damaged the school properties and assaulted the interim principal,” he said.
Meanwhile, students will resume sitting their exams on Monday.
On Thursday, the students boycotted their exams to express their disappointment over the decision to suspend Mr Fangata and Mr Tasa.
Dr Rodie told the students to they have to sit for their exams on Monday.
He said it’s important they do that.
He also assured the students leaders, the ministry will look into their demand for the reinstatement of the principal and his deputy.
“We only suspend them to allow an investigation to be conducted into the allegation.”
Dr Rodie urged the students to stay calm and concentrate on their school and leave the issue to the authority to deal with it.
The students have accepted the decision and will sit for their end year exams next week.
