Dear Editor – By necessity, demand for security services has risen substantially after the ethnic tension era.
Security firms emerged and increased in numbers as demand increased.
That was a commendable development because the Police itself did not and does not have adequate capacity to ensure peace in every neighbourhood and within commercial and institutional precincts.
As safety and protection was deemed to be assured by the increased number of security firms, the media also informed public about some very serious crimes committed by the very security guards hired to provide safety and protection.
The recent murder of the couple at Town Ground (who were my very good kind and humble friends), now demands review of the security system existing in the country.
I think it is time that the Government took immediate action to regulate the private security in the country.
The Parliament must enact an appropriate law that will ensure that security guards are professionally trained and that only competent persons should be licensed to own and operate security firms.
