The Solomon Islands national U20 men’s football team has secured their first three points of the OFC U20 championship in Vanuatu.
This followed their 3-0 victory over Cook Islands at the Lunganville Soccer City Stadium yesterday. The win gave them four points as they remain on second spot behind favourites, New Zealand with six points from two wins in group B.
Both teams kicked off the match on a high note in search for an early lead however could not find the back of the net for the first 45 minutes.
Solomon Islands broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second half by Augustine Waita who connected a deep cross right behind Cooks custodian Inia.
Two minutes later Albert Wetney extended the lead to 2-0 before Cook Islands could make any attempts to equalize.
Seven minutes before full time, Wetney strikes again for his second goal making it his third in the competition. The Cooks maintained a steady pace trying to create scoring chances however all attempts came short to the sound of the final whistle.
Solomon Islands will play New Zealand in the final group match on Saturday. A win or draw for them will see them through to the second stage of the competition.
