THE Solomon Islands United Party will now contest this year’s national election after the Political Parties Commission endorsed and approved its application.
The party recently took the Government to court following delays to appoint commissioners, who will need to meet to consider United Party’s application.
Under the Political Parties Integrity Act 2014, political parties wishing to contest national elections must register with the Political Parties Commission.
This is done by submitting an application to the Commission and meeting relevant provisions of the Act.
After the United Party took the matter to court, the government responded by appointing five commissioners.
They are Taeasi Sanga as chairperson, Sir Paul Tovua, Ruth Liloqula, Ashley Wickham, and Dr Jack Maebuta.
The commissioners met Monday this week in Honiara and deliberated on the applications of the United Party and Green Party.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Commission said both parties have satisfied the relevant provisions of the Act and therefore their applications for registrations have been endorsed.
The national election is expected to be held in March this year.
